How to choose an SG cricket bat
1. English willow or Kashmir willow
English willow is lighter for its size, softer and more responsive, which gives a bigger sweet spot and better ball pick-up. It is the choice for leather-ball cricket at club and higher levels. Kashmir willow is harder and heavier, more durable and lower priced – a good choice for beginners, practice and tennis or synthetic balls. 3. Weight and balance
Most adult players are comfortable between about 1,150 g and 1,250 g. A lighter bat helps quick hands and back-foot play; a heavier bat suits powerful front-foot hitters. Pick up the bat in your batting stance – it should feel balanced, not heavy at the bottom.
4. Knocking-in and care (English willow)
A new English willow bat must be prepared before facing a hard leather ball. Apply a light coat of raw linseed oil to the face, edges and toe (never the splice or handle), then knock in the face and edges with a bat mallet for several hours, increasing the force gradually. After that, use it in nets with old balls before match play. Store the bat in a cool, dry place and re-oil lightly a few times a season.
